Our History

1988

The North Shore Community Foundation, originally incorporated as the North Shore Charitable Foundation with a modest $151 endowment, was established in response to local needs by a group of dedicated community members. By 1991, it had grown to include six funds and $11,100 in assets.

1990

Olga Kempo Women's Fund established in memory of one of the founding members of the Foundation.

1991

Roger Clarke begins a 9-yr term as President of the Board.

1995 - 1998

Support for Youth & Health 

  • Fund for Children launched by the Cabeldu family

  • North Shore Union Board of Health Legacy Fund 

Celebrating Excellence​

  • Fund for Arts on the North Shore established (1995) supporting the annual FANS awards.

Education

  • North Vancouver Minor Hockey Scholarship Fund 

2000 - 2004

​DNV Public Library Endowment Fund established with a launch party at the new Lynn Valley site in 2000.
 

In Memorial:

  • Sheila Jones Senior' Fund established by Alan Jones in memory of his wife, a tireless volunteer and community worker.

2005

Patricia Scarlett becomes President.

2008 - 2012

​Signature Fundraiser introduced

The North Shore Mayor’ Golf Tournament is established in collaboration with municipalities and business leaders. The first beneficiary was the Lookout Shelter with a $67,500 gift (Impact area: Housing & Homelessness).

To enable longer term broad-based granting the Mayor’s Community Fund is launched with $48,800 through the tournament proceeds.

Education

Celebrating their Centennial year, City of North Vancouver established the Youth Centennial Scholarship to be awarded annually.

New Funds

  • District of North Vancouver Heritage Fund

  • Evergreen Music Fund is established by the Alsop family in memory of Sheila Alsop to honour her volunteer-ism.

  • A bequest from a parishioner launches the St. Martin’s Anglican Church Fund.

2015

David Alsop steps down as President after 9 years on the Board and serves as past president for 2016.  

2016 - 2019

Golf Tournament Beneficiaries

 In 2017,  to mark the 10th Annual Mayors’ Golf Tournament and in celebration of Canada’s 150th birthday, two designated charities were selected to each receive $50,000.

  • Quest Food Exchange: North Shore (Food security & Poverty reduction)

  • Turning Point Recovery Society: Residential and outreach (Health & Wellbeing)

  • North Shore Schizophrenia Society: Education program expansion (Health & Wellbeing)

  • Turning Point Recovery Society: Housing and wrap-around services supporting recovery (Health & Wellbeing)

  • Harvest Project: Program support (Food Security & Poverty reduction)

  • North Shore Disability Resource Centre: new mobile therapeutic service (Health & Well being)
     

Collaborative Corporate Leadership

The North Shore Waterfront Industries Fund is launched as a shared initiative between by Neptune Terminals, Western Stevedoring, Kinder Morgan Terminals, Fibreco Export and Seaspan with the net proceeds of their Waterfront Gala. Supporting services to meet the social needs of children and families on the North Shore. 

2021

2023

Micheal Boehm completes his term as President of the Board after 9 years.  He graciously continues as Past President and Chair Golf Tournament.

2024

New Leadership

Elaine McHarg formally joins as the first Chief Executive Officer after leading the granting programs through 2023.

The Board of Directors established the Micheal Beohm Community First Fund recognizing his leadership and  service to the community.

Care BC: North Shore Family Respite Centre (Health & Wellbeing)

 

Provincial program - BC Prosperity Fund

NSCF was assigned $765,000 for granting to address poverty reduction and homeless initiatives in North Vancouver. Fourteen organizations were awarded grants.

1987

North Shore Community Foundation Administration Fund is established.

1988

Sheila Gilmour elected as  Founding  President of the Board. 

1989

Marie Pearce (Founders) Fund established in memory of one of the Foundation’s pioneering members.

1991 - 1994

Education

  • Sienna and Nicole Strongman Memorial Awards established by their parents Judy and Gerry Strongman​

​North Shore Community Charity renamed North Shore Community Foundation. Becoming part of a Canada-wide network of community foundations.

2000

Marilynne Nowell becomes President of the Board.

2005 - 2006

​Expanding impact through community granting

  • Together Against Violence Legacy Fund established.

  • Colin Jones Memorial Fund for English Language Learning

  • Ward Animal Fund through a bequest

2008

David Alsop becomes President of the Board.

 

Sheila Gilmour (founding president) retires from the board after serving 20 years.

2013 - 2015

Foundation milestones​

  • NSCF celebrates 25 years of giving back to the community with over $1 million granted to a broad range of causes and organizations.

2020

Covid Pandemic

The Covid pandemic brought new challenges to the community. NSCF responded by redirecting contributions to the cancelled golf tournament to Avalon Recovery Centre and Athletics 4 Kids.    

2023

Supporting steps to Reconciliation

Recognizing the importance of truth, healing and respect the 2023 Golf Tournament supported four Indigenous-led youth-focused initiatives.

  • Sema7maka Canoe Family

  • Tsleil-Waututh Burrard and Salish Serpent Canoe Clubs  
     

National Granting Delivers

The Community Services Recovery Program (Government of Canada) provided funding for community services organizations to invest in key service areas. As a designated granting partner NSCF approved and administered $523,000 in grants to thirteen organizations.

Strengthening Belonging

The North Shore Community Fund (formerly the Mayor’s Trust Fund) reaches $1,000,000. A testament to the generosity of local community leaders, organizations, past and current Board and volunteers.
