Our People

David Alsop, President.  David has been a director of the NSCF since 2007, and a North Shore resident for almost 40 years.  He has had a long and varied career as a senior executive in businesses based on the North Shore including Versatile Pacific Shipyards, Vancouver Wharves and Navigata Communications.  He has also served as president of the North Vancouver Chamber of Commerce, and has been a member of the DNV Community Services Advisory Committee.

 

Aaron Kuzik, Director, Treasurer.  Aaron joined the board in 2010 and was born and raised in North Vancouver and continues to reside there with his family.  He is a Chartered Accountant and has worked in public practice for the past ten years with Rolfe Benson LLP.  He manages both private company and not-for-profit organizations focusing on quality control, income tax and estate matters.

 

Jackie Morris, Secretary. Jackie has been a lawyer for more than 20 years, and has a home-based practice in Upper Lonsdale limited to wills and estates. In 2005 she started a free legal clinic for North Shore seniors, located at the Silver Harbour Seniors’ Centre, and continues to volunteer there along with five other North Shore lawyers. She is a Master Gardener and on the executive of the Lynn Valley Garden Club.  She has lived in North Vancouver since 1989.

 

Janet Argent, Executive at Large.  Janet has lived and worked in the Seymour community of North Vancouver since 1976. For the past twenty-three years she was the owner/operator of Windridge Park Preschool, located in Ron Andrews Recreation Centre. Her interest in quality early childhood education led her to be involved in several community associations. She served as President of the Early Childhood Educators of BC – North Shore Branch, served as a member and Chair of the District of North Vancouver’s Childcare Grants Committee, and was also a member of the advisory committee to School District 44’s Early Learning Foundations Program. Her other passion is the arts. She served on the board and was president of the Seymour Art Gallery, and served as a representative to the arts programs at Parkgate Community Centre and past chair of the Centennial Theatre Society.

Lizette Bell, Director. With more than 18 years of experience, Lizette is a proactive, results-oriented and people-focused strategic communications leader with her own communications consulting firm. She has a record of successes in building and strengthening relationships with a range of stakeholders, including diverse ethnic groups, media, all levels of government, community groups and NGOs and delivering winning communications and public engagement strategies. Lizette’s track record includes innovative approaches to complex situations on high-profile, large-scale infrastructure and resource projects locally, nationally and internationally resulting in numerous firsts. Her most recent project was as Director Operations Communications for the Vancouver 2010 Games. Lizette currently serves as a director on the boards of United We Can, DVBIA and the North Shore Community Foundation.

 

Melanie Clark, Director.  Melanie was born and raised in the District of North Vancouver and has lived in the City of Vancouver for the last 5 years.  She has worked for and with youth in recreation, advocacy/engagement, and outreach capacities for about 15 years and has been employed by the District of West Vancouver as their Youth Program Coordinator since 2005. She has also been a volunteer with the NSCF on the Grants Review Committee since 1998. In addition to volunteering with different non-profit organizations, Melanie enjoys spending her spare time playing sports and spending time with friends and family.

 

Chern Heed, Director.  Chern joined the NSCF Board in 2007 and has lived on the North Shore for 28 years. He spent the first 16 years of his career in the engineering field, and then 20 years in airport planning, management and operations in Canada and abroad. He has served as the General Manager of the airports in Vancouver and Toronto.  Mr. Heed’s international experience includes five years in executive positions responsible for the planning, management and operation of the new Hong Kong Airport. Since 1999, Chern has worked as an airports consultant, including advising on redevelopment of airports in Nassau, Bogotá, Moscow and the development of the new airport in Dubai. In 2007, as a member of a 3-person panel, he completed an 18-month review of Canadian aviation security, and an airport security analysis for the Air India disaster inquiry.

 

Andrew Hoffman, Director.  Andrew joined the Board of NSCF in 2008. Originally from Ontario, Andrew now lives with his wife and children in North Vancouver.  He is a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) and has worked in the investment industry since 1991.  He manages investment portfolios for individual and charitable clients with Leith Wheeler Investment Counsel Ltd. He volunteers with Ronald McDonald House BC, and is a member of the Estate Planning Counsel of Vancouver and CFA Vancouver.

 

Chris Kalbfleisch, Director.  Chris was born and raised in Toronto and completed a Masters Degree in Statistics at the University of Western Ontario (1994) before beginning a career in finance as a bond trader at Scotia Capital Markets in Toronto. He spent 3 years working at a hedge fund in London before moving to Vancouver to join Connor, Clark & Lunn as a Fixed Income portfolio manager.  He has been a partner at CC&L for 6 years and resides on the North Shore with his wife and 3 children.  His interests are skiing, trail running, mountain biking, and Formula One racing.

 

Elizabeth McLaren, Director. Born and educated in New Zealand, Elizabeth has lived on the North Shore for over 30 years and raised her family here.  Now retired from a career in management with BC Hydro, she is full-time artist working out of her home studio.

The past two years Elizabeth has served on the NSCF Grants Committee.  In prior years she has served as: Director of the BC Hydro Professional Employees Society; Chair of the North Vancouver Community Arts Council, President, Capilano Tennis Club and for six years a Commissioner on the North Vancouver Recreation Commission.

 

Janet Morningstar, Director.  Janet joined the NSCF board in 2008 after serving on the Grants Committee.  She is a longtime resident of the North Shore, growing up in Edgemont Village and residing in West Vancouver for the past 22 years.  She retired from a 33-year teaching/counselling career with the Vancouver School Board. Janet served on the North Vancouver Community Arts Council as a director and chair for 7 years.  She was very active in the NVAC International Film Festival. She is on the curriculum committee of Eldercollege, and is a volunteer for the City of North Vancouver and the West Vancouver Senior Centre.

 

Tanya Murray, Director. Tanya joined the Board of NSCF in 2010.  Tanya is a lawyer with a practice in wills, trusts, estates and corporate law at Heritage Law in West Vancouver.  Prior to joining Heritage Law, Tanya spent several years practicing in corporate finance and commercial law.  Tanya was raised on the North Shore and currently lives in Lynn Valley with her husband and young daughter.  She enjoys getting involved in community events.  Her interests include hiking, pilates and traveling, particularly to Spanish-speaking countries.

 

Sue Ridout, Director.  Sue is a television producer and director who makes documentaries and other factual TV programs. She worked for twenty years as a producer for CTV and CBC, culminating in her role as Executive Producer of News & Current Affairs for CBC Television in B.C. She formed Dreamfilm Productions in 2001 as a home for high-quality documentaries, and has made award-winning programs for CTV, CBC, History, and Knowledge. She won the 2009 Gemini Award for Best Biography Documentary for her film “Peace Warrior” about the rehabilitation of Canadian soldier Trevor Greene, who was badly injured in Afghanistan.  (More details at www.dreamfilm.ca.)
